Review & Description
Although it incorporates a lot of up-to-date CG effects, the violent fantasy Rin: Daughter of Mnemosyne (2008) feels older than it is. The story elements lifted from earlier series ranging from Ah! My Goddess to X contribute to the passé tone. Having ingested a "time fruit" produced by Yggdrasil (the tree of creation in Norse mythology), Rin, the voluptuous title character, is immortal--and she proves it by dying and coming back with a frequency Shirley MacLaine might envy. Assisted by her equally deathless sidekick Mimi, Rin pursues mysteries and malefactors that invariably involve the eerie Apos, the murderous immortal/cyborg Sayara, and various members of the Maeno family. All the evil schemes and feats of derring-do provide opportunities for a lot of fan-service nudity and grotesque violence. Rin feels like a throwback to the sadistic misogyny of Wicked City and Demon City Shinjuku: Rin, Mimi, and the secondary female characters are subjected to assaults that range from mutilation and torture to being simultaneously raped and devoured by male angels. Although the subtitle refers to Mnemosyne, the personification of memory in Greek mythology, Rin is better forgotten. (Rated TV MA: suitable for ages 18 and over: nudity, profanity, grotesque imagery, alcohol use, violence, violence against women, cannibalism, torture, and sexual situations, including lesbianism and bondage) --Charles Solomon

Rin Asogi is an immortal private detective with a thirst for vodka and a talent for attracting things that go bump in the night. In a series of nightmarish vignettes spanning sixty-five years, Rin’s lush body is sadistically pierced, blown up, and mulched to a bloody pulp. The fiend behind her tortured existence is Apos, an eternal being obsessed with sacrificing Rin to Yggdrasil, the tree of all life. While Rin struggles to unravel the secrets of her endless agony, Apos lurks in the shadows, eager to tear into her ripe body and devour the memories of her countless lives. Rin’s no stranger to the realm of the dead, but her next visit could last forever. Read more
